Brophy’s trenchant views and incisive intellect made her a figure of some repute: as well as being a highly regarded literary critic, she appeared on television, radio and in the news press, controversially attacking those cultural institutions and traditional norms she considered immoral. A skilled left-wing polemicist, she wrote on an impressive variety of topics, including homosexual equality, prison reform, humanism, marriage, and the rights of animals. She was an effective activist: one enduring legacy is that she co-founded the Writer’s Action Group, which campaigned successfully for Public Lending Right, the system which rewards authors for public library loans of their books.
