I’m happy to have contributed an essay to The Vegan Magazine the publication of the Vegan Society. The essay is available to members (join for only £2/month).
The essay begins:
As vegans, we are accustomed to examining food ingredient labels to answer that never-ending question: is this vegan? Yet how often do vegans ask that same question about a book? For cookbooks and non-fiction, the subject matter itself typically indicates if the book is animal-friendly. But fiction is a different story.
When it comes to finding our next great novel to read, we’re not likely to find a vegan section at the bookstore. It’s not that vegans cannot enjoy mainstream fiction, it’s just that we’ve grown weary of seeing meat-centric meals depicted as normal while vegan characters, if there are any at all, are portrayed as difficult, combative or simply strange.
